During the Vietnam War, the country was divided into two camps. The side who wanted the war were called the 'Hawks' and who didn't were the 'Doves'.

The 'Hawks' believed that the war was necessary to halt the spread of communism in Asia and supported American military involvement in the region.
The 'Doves' believed that the problem in Vietnam was a civil war and that America should not intervene and endanger innocent people's lives. They held numerous anti-war demonstrations across the country.

The United States was concerned that communism would spread to South Vietnam and then the rest of Asia. It decided to assist the South Vietnamese government by sending money, supplies, and military advisers.

During the Vietnam War, units from the United States Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard trained and assisted South Vietnamese forces; located and destroyed North Vietnamese troops and supply routes.
