Why, by 1914, was Europe both so powerful and so anxious?

Be sure to consider the forces of mass education, nationalism, socialism, and industrialism.

Answer :

By 1914, Europe had become powerful due to the forces of mass education, nationalism, socialism, and industrialism. These forces had allowed Europe to expand and modernize, giving them great benefits in terms of economic growth and global influence.

At the same time, though, Europe had become increasingly anxious due to fears of competition and conflict between nations. Nationalism in particular had created tensions as nations sought to increase their power, while industrialism had led to an arms race as nations sought to raise and maintain strong militaries.

Socialism too led to increased competition between social groups, making the idea of conflict increasingly possible. These forces made Europe extremely powerful, yet at the same time highly anxious, laying the groundwork for the events of WWI.
