After Kalkaua's death in 1891, Queen Liliuokalani attempted to repeal the new constitution. She was deposed in 1893, primarily at the hands of the Committee of Safety, a group made up of Hawaiian natives and permanent foreigners of American, British, and German ancestry, many of whom had had US educations.
