Located in the Hawaiian Islands, the Hawaiian Kingdom or Kingdom was a sovereign nation. The nation was founded in 1795 when Kamehameha the Great, a warrior leader from the independent island of Hawai'i, invaded the other independent islands of O'ahu, Maui, Molokai, and Lana'i and brought them under his control. Kauai and Niihau voluntarily merged into the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1810, uniting the entire Hawaiian archipelago. The House of Kamehameha and the House of Kalkaua, two significant dynastic houses, governed the kingdom. The major European nations recognized the kingdom. In order to stop other powers (such Britain and Japan) from establishing hegemony, the United States became its main commercial partner and kept an eye on it. King Kalkaua was overthrown by the Honolulu Rifles, an anti-monarchist militia, in 1887, and was compelled to accept a new constitution. After Kalkaua's death in 1891, Queen Liliuokalani attempted to repeal the new constitution. She was deposed in 1893, primarily at the hands of the Committee of Safety, a group made up of Hawaiian natives and permanent foreigners of American, British, and German ancestry, many of whom had had US educations.
