Creating Maps: Population Superlatives
**Purpose:**
Create maps to represent population superlatives for different regions around the world.
**Assignment Instructions:**
1. **Gather materials and necessary information.**
a) Review the requirements of the maps before you begin.
b) Ask your teacher whether you will be using a presentation, drawing, or word-processing software to develop the required maps. You may also print out your maps and complete them by hand, using pens, markers, and colored pencils before uploading. Confirm the acceptable method with your teacher.
2. **Consider the required elements of the maps.**
a) Access the following website:
- 2014 World Population Data Sheet
b) Create five world maps with appropriate titles. You may copy a map from the internet or use the one provided in the appendix. Each map will represent different data found on the provided website.
- Map 1: Crude Birth Rate (CBR)
- Map 2: Crude Death Rate (CDR)
- Map 3: Natural Increase Rate (NIR)
- Map 4: Total Fertility Rate (TFR)
- Map 5: Life Expectancy (LE)
c) Examine the regions of the world using the website. The 13 world regions are:
- East and Southern Africa
- East Asia
- North Africa and West Asia
- South Asia
- West and Central Africa
- Southeast Asia
- Caribbean and Central America
- Europe
- North America
- North Eurasia
- South America
- Oceania
d) For each region, identify the countries with the highest and lowest CBR, CDR, NIR, TFR, and LE.
e) Label the highest and lowest country for every region on each map, along with the numerical information. For example, on the crude birth rate map in the Western Asia region, Yemen should be labeled as the highest at 36, and Qatar as the lowest at 11.
f) Create an appropriate color key for each map to represent your findings. For example, red may represent the countries with the highest numbers and blue the lowest numbers. Color each labeled country according to your key.
