A woman walks south at a speed of 2.0 mph for 60 minutes. She then turns around and walks north a distance of 3000 meters in 25 minutes. What is the woman's average speed during her entire motion?

Answer :

The woman's average speed during her entire motion is 73.15 meter/minutes.

What is speed?

The speed is the total distance traveled by the object in a unit time interval.

Mathematically,

Average speed = Total distance/Time

Now it is given that,

Total time taken by the women = 60 + 25 minutes

Total time taken by the women = 85 minutes

Now for distance covered by women during her southward direction

= speed x time

= 2 mph x 60 minutes

∵ 60 minutes = 1 hour

and 1 mile = 1.609km

Distance (southward) = 2 mph x 1 hour

Distance (southward) = 2 miles

Distance (southward) = 2 x 1.609 km

Distance (southward) = 3.218 km

Now it is given, distance travelled northward = 3000m + 3 km

So, Total distance = 3.218 + 3 km = 6.218km = 6218 meters

and total time = 60 + 25 minutes = 85 minutes

Hence, Average speed = 6218/85 meter/minutes

Average speed = 73.15 meter/minutes

Hence, the woman's average speed during her entire motion is 73.15 meter/minutes.
